when you signed up for my Bass fishing information, you probably
guessed I'd get around to spilling a few tips about crankbaits
(one of the most popular techniques of catching Bass). Even if
you feel you know everything there is to know about fishing crankbaits,
I ureg you to take a moment to hear me out on this.
It's important.
I recently
met a Bass fishing "gear freak". You know, one of this
guys that's only been at it a few months, and is obsessed with
equipment and gear.
He reads every
magazine, and invests hundreds of dollars on everything he hears
you need to do to catch bass.
The only problem
is, he doesn't have the techniques down.
...and honestly,
I'm not trying to be mean here, but the guy looks like a clown
out on the water. Shiny new pole, reel, tacklebox. Brand new fishing
vest, and hat...absolutely no wear and tear on anything.
...and
then you watch his movements. Awkward...and it's to be expected because
fishing isn't in his "blood"
yet.
So
anyway, this guy started talking about the best colors to use for crankbaits.
I can't even remember what he said, but I asked him how many Bass he'd
caught using the crankbait colors he was talking about.
He
stopped yapping, looked down, and admitted he hadn't caught a single
bass using the colors he was preaching.
Then
I told him this...
80%
of the success you'll have with crankbaits is in how you retreive it.
Obviously
they are designed to dive and rise based on how quickly/slowly you retrieve
it. The color is an
afterthought.
Start
off with an erratic retrieve for the best appeal to bass. From slow
to fast, from fast to slow. The
crankbait will pitch and dive in erratic fashion the Bass can't resist.
And
they ain't hittin' it because of the color...they are hittin' it because
something that looks interesting is "running away" from them.
Remember,
cooler water means a slower retrieve...the Bass are sluggis, and your
retrive should slow down...and when it heats up, you got it, retrieve
faster.
On
to color...obviously not as important and you want to stick to the basics.
Try
to match the color of the most common "forage" (bait fish)
in your area. And stock your tackle box with
these colored cranks. Silver/black shad, green/silver shad, chrome,
orange/brown crawfish...etc. Just match the color to what is commonly
found in your area.
Now,
if you want something that's going to take your Bass fishing to a whole
new level - you've got to try my Bass Fishing Secret Weapon. I know
your probably tired of me bringing it up, but I'm only doing it because
I have never seen anything so effective for swarming thousands of minnows,
and hundreds of Bass.
Did
you know that Bass fishermen all over the country are using it year
round? That's right - it works in the winter, spring, summer, and fall
- with equally good results. (Heck, there are even guys up north using
it successfully for ice fishing)
It
multiplies the effectiveness of mother nature's natural food chain,
right in front of your eyes. You're sure gonna like this:
Here's
part of what Michael Hafer said about his experience using it for minnows
to catch crappie...
"After
about 10 minutes there were probaly 200-300 minnows swimming in
a circle around the Secret..."

"Dan,
Last night
my friend and I used the Bass Secret Weapon for the first time.
All I can say is WOW!!! Here is how it went. This is all absolutely
the truth and can be verified with my partner.
We were planning
to go out on the lake on Saturday night, so we decided to go out
Friday night and see how it worked on baitfish, and hopefully
fill up on minnows for the next night. We did not have much time
and all of this happened in the course of about 45 minutes.
We went to
a boat launch area and put the "secret" in about 6'
of water next to the dock. I turned it on and within 2 minutes
minnows started to appear all around the spot.
After about
10 minutes there were probaly 200-300 minnows swimming in a circle
around the "secret". My friend put a seine in the water
in front of their route and brought up a dozen or more each time.
I went back to the truck and got my rod, and I am glad I did.
I rigged up
one of the minnows and began to fish. This is now about 25 minutes
after we started. Now there are too many minnows to count. I fished
the edges of the bait and within 5 minutes I caught a small crappie.
We estimate that by now there was well over 1000 minnows just
circling.
At this point
we started to notice noise of minnows jumping out of the water
around the edges. We could only attribute this to the game fish
coming in and chasing the bait.
Next, within
about 10 minutes I had 2 good hits that I missed setting the hook,
(my fault - I was too busy watching the school of bait fish circling
below) Then we noticed the time and decided to wrap it up. We
had about 100 good 2"-4" shiners and we said one more
cast. This time about 1 minute and something nailed my minnow
so hard it bent my rod seriously and pulled the knot off of my
hook. (Next time I will remember to check that before I cast)
During this
someone came in off the lake with a boat and said he had been
out for about 4 1/2 hours and had hardly a bite. I did not have
the heart to tell him how we were doing.
I would have
to say this "secret" really works and will definitely
be a part of our tackle for fishing and catching bait for many
years to come."
Sincerely,
Michael
